Multiple Teams · Blue Flame Cross Country Teams Hosted Their First Home Meet of the Season Against Walhalla, Travelers Rest, and Berea


 

Last night the Blue Flame Cross Country teams hosted their first home meet of the season against Walhalla, Travelers Rest, and Berea. In the Girls’ Race, 7th grader Grace Newman and senior Amber Saitta tied for 2nd place with a time of 20:55. Freshman Juiliana Hernandez ran another personal record time of 24:27 and finished 12th overall in the race.  Junior Holly Newman finished 13th overall with a time of 24:47, and 8th grader Campbell Sherwood rounded out the top 5 for the Lady Blue Flame, who had their top 5 runners finish within the top 16 of the race. Walhalla was the overall team winner in the race, and the Lady Blue Flame finished 2nd place overall for the team scoring category.

 

In the Boys’ Race, Senior Dylan Bray ran a personal record time of 17:59 and finished 3rd overall in the race. Senior Jackson Masters, 7th grader Chase Ashe, Sophomore Matthew Mitchell, and Senior Levi Shelton all finished in the top 12 for the Blue Flame with times of 18:46, 19:07, 19:10, and 19:33. Masters, Ashe, and Mitchell all ran personal record times on their home course. 7th grader Liam McCall and 9th grader Landon Howell also ran personal record times, and both finished under 20 minutes in the race running 19:53 and 19:54 respectively. The Blue Flame had 13 boys run personal record times on their home course and had 6 runners place within the top 15 overall for the race. Walhalla was the overall team winner in the race, and the Blue Flame finished 2nd place overall for the team scoring category.

 

After the race, Coach Furr said, “Unbelievable, that would be the word I would use to best describe our effort tonight on their home course. This is one of those races that could really be a springboard for the rest of our season.” He also said, “This week in practice the challenge was simple, run a better time than you did the previous race.”

 

The Blue Flame will race again this coming Saturday at the Hurricane Invitational hosted by Wren High School.
