The Pickens High School women’s basketball team last week lost two away games to county rivals Easley and Liberty and beat Greer Middle College at home.

The Lady Blue Flame lost its first game of the season Dec. 9 against the Liberty Lady Red Devils 39-27 in a game played at Liberty. Pickens rebounded on Dec. 12 against Greer Middle College by downing the Lady Blazers 42-38 at Peggy Harden Anthony Gymnasium in Pickens. In a Dec. 13 rematch of a game that Pickens won at home in the first game of the season, the Easley High Lady Green Wave defeated Pickens 35-20 in Easley. The Lady Blue Flame now stand 2-2 on the season.

“After two big losses, leadership is critical at this point,” said Rikki Owens, Lady Blue Flame basketball coach. “We coaches are eager to see who steps up on the court this week. The girls work so hard in practice, and now it’s time to show everyone what we’ve got! It’s time to compete and start seeing the girls’ chemistry come together and to play as one.”

In the Liberty game, senior Kaylee Gillespie led Blue Flame scorers with 10 points, followed by freshman Macie Gentry with five, senior Sami Turner with two, senior Olivia Wilson with two, sophomore Hannah Roper with two, sophomore Caroline Lucas with two and freshman Kaylee Owens with two.

Against Greer Middle College, Gillespie and Turner each had 14 points to lead the Lady Blue Flame. Senior Alex Dow scored seven points, Lucas had five and Gentry had two. Dow led Blue Flame rebounders with eight boards, and Gillespie had seven steals.

In the Easley game, Turner led Blue Flame scorers with eight points, followed by Dow with six, Gillespie with five and senior Savannah Perry with one. Gillespie led Pickens rebounders with 14 boards, and Gentry had four steals.

The Lady Blue Flame are hosting their first-ever Christmas tournament this coming weekend—The Festival of Flames. Owens said the team is excited to have five teams join the Lady Blue Flame for a memorable event.

Also this week, the Lady Blue Flame play Liberty High School on Thursday, Dec. 19 in the friendly confines of Peggy Harden Anthony Gymnasium in Pickens.
